@chaos.crafts.andcleats: There’s something special about watching your child do something she loves. My girl may not eat, sleep and breathe softball. She loves playing. She loves watching her sister play. She loves her teammates and her softball family. And she also loves being a nine-year-old little girl with a whole world outside of the field. And you know what? I hope she always does. She may be quiet. She may not ask for the spotlight. She’ll smile, go wherever she’s needed, cheer for her teammates (quietly) and do her job. But never mistake a quiet kid—or a kid who loves the game differently than someone else—for a kid who doesn’t love it. There isn’t one right way to love a game. You can love playing and still love watching your big sister play. You can love your teammates just as much as the competition. You can be quiet and still be competitive. You can be respectful and still want to win. And you can love softball without softball having to be everything you are. I will never apologize for raising a sweet, respectful, kind, well-rounded athlete. She’s nine. I hope she has a hundred things she loves. This game will teach her a lot of lessons. Some will be harder than others. But through every one of them, I’ll be right beside her. Because one person’s decision will never define her talent, her heart, or how much she loves this game.
