@chinita_rajheen: woman from Chakeri, Kanpur went to a marriage venue in Shyamnagar late on Friday night and stopped her husband Ashif's second nikah (marriage). She claimed that their first marriage is still legally valid because they have not divorced. Police took Ashif into custody after she filed a written complaint. According to the woman's statement: She and Ashif met on Facebook in 2018. They had a love marriage (nikah) in 2022 with their families' consent. Her gauna (the ceremony after which the bride begins living with her husband's family) did not take place until January 2024. She says that about two months after moving in, her husband and his family began demanding dowry and money. When she refused, she alleges she was physically assaulted and threatened. She returned to her parents' home in April 2024. She filed a dowry harassment complaint in June 2025, and the case is currently pending in court. Despite the ongoing case, she says Ashif continued contacting her on WhatsApp and met her several times. A neighbor informed her that Ashif was getting married again. After her calls to him went unanswered, she and her sister went to the wedding venue.
