Hey, music person here (I have a degree in classical music and have direct experience with early music institutions). The early music movement didn't fail, it was absorbed. My school (IU) has an entire institute for historical performance, and it's one of several (Juilliard, Yale, the Schola Cantorum in Basel). It has also influenced outside educational spheres. For example mainstream orchestras now play Bach and Handel with smaller groups, less vibrato, and lighter articulation. The movement's ideas became standard practice, which is usually what winning looks like. On instruments, I'd gently push on "worse." A fortepiano isn't a lower-quality piano it's a different instrument with a lighter action, and faster decay, and a clearer bass, so Mozart's textures sound balanced on it in a way they can on a Steinway only with effort. And the best players of any era were largely given the best instruments their patrons could afford. For example, adult Mozart's Walter fortepiano was a top-tier instrument, meticulously maintained. Some period limitations were real (natural horns cant play chromatic scales, so composers wrote around the gaps), but that's a constraint the music was designed for, not a defect in craftsmanship.

Emily Wilson in her introduction for her translation of the odyssey actually talks a lot about this in her choices around translation. She chose instead to translate it to modern, colloquial language that is easy to understand rather than go word by word or use lofty, outdated language and so on.

yes- my argument was that for the “preservation of authenticity” then we should prioritize greek, mediterranean, northern african, and arab actors for the casting rather than the repeat anglo saxon actors in every movie, but how can a piece be authentic without a greek producer and direct guidance from greek storytellers throughout the entire making of the move. i actually think helen of troy’s casting was perfect because we see throughout later years that mediterranean women were pressured to appear like helen of troy- a beauty standard that they could never reach no matter what, and i think that it honestly was a great artistic decision to cast lupita1

It annoys me a little but Zendaya was a stunning choice. Art is art and the odyssey is going to be remade and remade. I don’t think most Americans even know what a Greek person looks like.

Stories with timeless, overarching themes that touch on problems we still face today (the homers and Plato’s) are the works that survived- we left behind pretty much everything else for a reason, it’s so vain to get caught up on replicating exact historical conditions, it’s just white mens idolizing a time they had more social power.

(1) Helen of Troy hatched from an egg. Like, I feel like her portrayal really is up for interpretation. (2) present-day Greeks have nothing to do with the Ancient Greeks. (3) present-day Greeks are very much not considered white in Europe.

They mistake artistic, philosophical, or expressive authenticity for ‘mere’ authenticity. They’re not concerned with whether or not Film Odysseus is recognizable to Epic Odysseus, but they are concerned with which fabric comprises their robes.

You cannot in good faith make the argument that a white woman with veneers and plastic surgery is a more “accurate” option - the pick & choose mentality of the argument around this movie is insane

To your point, I would like to add that oftentimes chasing authenticity fails because people can't parse through their own anachronisms when interpreting "historical accuracy."

I mean I dislike the movie being shortened to be easier to sit through and the burning a replica boat then not paying for it proves Nolan is a hack and not keeping the story arcs that show Odysseus being lured by Calypso into a life of revelry only to backlash against that later but him trying to be more masculine and independent overall fails him in arcs they cut from the story so it loses feminist substance and the basic tradition of the story, Helen being black and considered the most beautiful woman in the world makes more than enough sense but them not having almost a single notably Mediterranean face makes the whole thing kind of just a Hollywood stage for a bunch of spectacle and BS which i think most brown female or queer/Hispanic etc representation is dumbed down worse ie Elio from Pixar losing all gay/gender nonconform. aspects or the playstation game with the Bronx girl forced into medieval fantasy and bad dialogue or that Horizon Hunters or whatever game where the characters seem deliberately goofy with wacky overly charicaturish animations that make them seem like weirdo villagers you could never be if you somehow wanted to and are stereotypically unattractive like a black guy with weird hairline way back like he's 30's balding and non-handsome face nothing like Idris Elba or Denzel or famous ⬛dudes That would be in a commercial

There is no such thing as ‘authenticity’…everything is a simulacrum of a palimpsest. It’s turtles all the way down.

the odyssey is as divorced from greek culture as aerodynamics. it absolutely doesn’t matter that none of them are greek
