@autisticpsychologist: How I found career success as an autistic person (my best tips for getting an autism-friendly job) #autisticadult#autism#autistic #neurodivergent #autismintheworkplace
Thank you for this video! How it helped me: I already signed the contract for a new job and although I have an overall good really impression of the place and people,
I have been worried whether I would be able to meet the expectations coming with responsibility of the new workplace. Also had had thoughts like what people would think when they realized that I am somehow different and see my weaknesses.
It was a good reminder to focus on my strengths which is also a training field in general in my life (not only in the area of work).
I don't always like watching long videos, but when they fit well into my situation and treat topics that bother me anyway (like this video), I do.
I also find it helpful, that you present your content in a calm but at the same time lively enough way of speaking.

What’s easy for me? Learning a lot about a little. Having a good radio voice. Good at charm. Good at explaining things. Good at tinkering. Good at paying attention to other people’s lives. Dunno how these strengths map onto a job lol

Question how to navigate this. I can’t see through the BS company values/culture until it’s too late. My skillset and employability is strengthened by actual care and response to ethics, morality, and just doing the right thing. When a program/job chooses profit over people, commits injustices, violates safety of environment, employees, job security, etc. I burnout and become unemployed. How do I tell which companies are genuine?

Most advice for ASD workers is just as useless as the overwhelming majority of behavior therapy for ADHD.
"You struggle with self control? Here's a strategy to improve your life that requires creating habits that you aren't capable of maintaining."
"You burnout from the cognitive load of navigating workplace social dynamics? Here's a bunch more information for you to keep in mind at all times while interacting with people so you can try harder to pretend to be normal."

I really wanted to my a psychologist... My grades were not high enough for me to do it, so I became a social worker... Now I have burnout and is on sickleave and are looking into a new education to become an electric technician 😅.
I love problem-solving, I'm very creative and I'm fairly good at different crafts be it sewing, cooking, weaving, drawing, music, knitting, crochet, woodwork or other "crafts". I grew up in the lower middle class so I fixed a lot of stuff and did a lot of DIY because it was cheaper.

AuDHDer here, the video really gave me a new perspective on what to look out for in a working environment. The only problem that I have is, that even when I know my strengths and capitalize on them, I still often suffer from task paralysis or just cannot (cleanly) finish a task (at work), which again creates stress. So I guess that most of my strengths get reinforced by autism but most ADHD symptoms hold me back from really profiting from them. It feels like I have so much potential but I just cannot really trust myself. I got diagnosed late 4 weeks ago, so I might still have a smaller horizon of comprehension but that's why I want to learn!

I despise how almost all of the suggestions people give are number related, I hate it, I can’t do numbers and I mean that with the utmost sincerity I’ve managed to use a calculator for addition and yet still I managed to get the wrong answer.

I’m a high masking, late diagnosed woman. I worked in high pressure corporate jobs for 20+ years until I was laid off. It was hell… I’m now a happily self employed psychotherapist working with neurodivergent people. I love it.

May be a bummer but the most reliable strategy I have seen is simply to align your interedt and focus to an in-demand skill. Whether it is coding or trade or craft or law or medicine, if you are skilled you will have leverage and people won't care that much that you are neurodivergent.

That's why I'm looking for remote jobs, no better accommodation that home sweet home.
But work market in Ukraine is so shit right now, no matter what I do and where I look, in a couple of months I end up with such a low salary I need to look for better job again

I really appreciated the long format. It gave you more time to go in depth with solid examples. It also worked well to listen while working on other stuff. Thanks for all your work and encouragement.

"Perfection is a mirage, only foolishness causes one to persue it"
that being said i have used my strengths to move from one job to another, as the idea of a career sounds like prison. Like using simple pattern recognition, i have always simply changed the words i chose in my resume to match the needs of the work described, before keywords were an invention of the internet. i look for jobs that interest me and that have areas that i wish to master and may lead into better more interesting work. Or, into creating 1 of several businesses over the years. learn from failures, apply strengths back into a new direction eventually 😉
Same thing with university studies and elective courses.

I switched from education to IT to improve my constant overstimulation. Surprisingly I'm actually good at it. I do better in men dominated spheres so far.😅 And my educational knowledge actually gives me a leg up.

Would love to hear more about being an autistic entrepreneur. I feel as if a lot of advice out there leans heavily on hustle culture which is not sustainable at all. I would like to know how you’re able to figure out what to automate and also how do you deal with clients who want meetings that could simply be emails.
