🚨 Handling the “eye- roller”👇 It can feel disrespectful when someone rolls their eyes during a conversation which if you’re their manager may lead you to react in a way that unintentionally perpetuates the dynamic. Eye-rolling as shown in this video is a form of passive aggressive communication that people use when they feel unable or unwilling to communicate what the issue is directly (there can be many reasons for this). We can all be guilty of this from time to time but ideally we want to avoid doing it as to build strong relationships we need to communicate concerns/ issues directly rather than holding them in and communicating them unconstructively. As the manager I would recommend you respond in a way that creates safety and models honest & transparent communication so you can understand what the issue is behind the eye-rolling. Phrases like: “I noticed you rolled your eyes- what’s bothering you” If they say nothing is wrong try: “It matters to me if something is bothering you. It would be good to know what that is so we can address it” Try to avoid “telling them off” as this is likely to perpetuate the behaviour.   It the passive aggressive behaviour continues then I would recommend reinforcing the need for open communication and setting boundaries. ⭐️ Please note sometimes people who are neurodivergent experience involuntary eye movements. They are not being passive aggressive so always check. You’ve got this 💪 💬 Leave a 🙌 in the comments if this was helpful 👀 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and intended for guidance purposes only.
