this movie is about how black men and boys are forced to be tough and it ultimately leads to their downfall because they rely on anger to express themselves and not communication. that's why the stepmom said 'you pushed him' to the father. yes, he's at fault for killing his girlfriend, but it's much more complicated than just 'hes a monster and a murderer'.
