The difference is that Troy never marketed itself as a faithful adaptation. That’s why it’s called “Troy”, not “The Iliad”. It was always presented as a war film loosely inspired by the Trojan War. The filmmakers never claimed they were faithfully adapting Homer the way Nolan repeatedly did with The Odyssey. Nolan didn’t just take a few creative liberties. From the casting choices to the worldview, the film barely resembled Greek mythology. If you changed the characters’ names, you’d think you were watching a medieval or Viking movie with a vague Greek aesthetic. He stripped away the philosophical, cultural, religious/pagan and mythological core that defines Homer’s epic, leaving something fundamentally different. It might have been a great American movie, visually and cinematically, but it’s not a good adaptation. Nolan didn’t honour Homer, he used his name to present his own worldview.

Troy was so bad and I'm old enough to remember everyone at the time agreeing on that. the odyssey is probably the greatest classical civilization epic ever made, maybe gladiator held that title before? odyssey is on a different level to gladiator in almost every way. I'd say the acting is on par between the films, the Hans Zimmer + Lisa Gerrard scored comes close but falls short. every other aspect odyssey is in a different league.

I went to a press screening of Troy in 2004 in London and journalists in the audience laughed at some of the bad acting. Re-watching it before I went to see Odyssey, as you say it’s so boring. There is literally no magic in that movie.
