Often the biggest issue is sewage overflow going into the harbor. So the “clean up” is providing enough sewage capacity to handle rainstorms - in Denmark that is accomplished through building a secondary pipe system for rain water that is being led untreated into the sea. The sewage will then only handle actual sewage and grey water from buildings which always comes in a predictable amount. This process of adding a secondary pipe system takes decades to complete.

This isn’t super related, but as an American living in Australia there is a culture of ocean baths (pools next to the ocean filled with sea water) and it adds SO MUCH to ocean and water culture it blew my mind

I went to grad school there and it’s an amazing city. There is a waterfront spot just outside of downtown called Amager Beachpark that is lovely

makes me a little jealous, i live in Managua and we are in the shore of a big lake but you can't swim because of sewage and Kodak dumped mercury. we also have a crater lake but it's full of trash and street waste. the lake was cleaned to the point it won't stink but you can't swim there

It's a similar situation in Stockholm, they also have decks throughout the city and even in the old town where you can go for a swim, cool stuff!

visited recently during a "hot day" (I'm from the southern US and it felt great to me) but I was so jealous of the life and livability of Copenhagen. so many people around, swimming, paddleboarding, hanging at waterfront cafes
