According to authorities, 39-year-old Michael Cain has been charged with an open count of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of 22-year-old Esmeralda Romero. Jail records show he is being held without bond. Investigators say the incident began Monday at the Albuquerque Encore Apartments when Cain became upset over water allegedly dripping from Romero’s patio onto his own. He reportedly complained to the leasing office before leaving. Romero later went to the leasing office herself, telling staff that Cain had come to her apartment, pounded on her door, and harassed her over the issue. She explained that any water likely came from her dog’s water bowl and denied intentionally pouring water onto his patio. Leasing staff advised her to contact security or call 911 if she felt threatened. Police allege that as Romero left the leasing office, Cain rushed toward her from the parking lot and attacked her with a knife, stabbing her multiple times. She died from her injuries. Authorities say Cain fled the scene, discarded the knife, and then called 911, allegedly telling dispatchers he had stabbed someone. Officers quickly located and arrested him.
