@daily2cents: Sometimes I think the hardest part about being Gen X is looking back at the 80s and realizing we had absolutely no idea how much we were going to miss it. Back then, it was just life. Sitting in our bedrooms listening to the radio, waiting forever for our favorite song to come on so we could record it onto a cassette. Talking on the phone for hours. Making mixtapes. Watching MTV. Going to the mall with our friends, hanging out at the arcade, roller skating, going to school dances, having sleepovers and riding our bikes until it was time to come home. None of it seemed important at the time. We were too busy wanting to grow up. We didn’t know there would be a last summer when all of our friends were still right there. A last sleepover. A last bike ride home. A last night at the roller rink. A last time we’d walk through the front door of a place we thought would always be there. And we certainly didn’t know how quickly the years would go. That’s what 80s nostalgia does to me now. I can hear one song from the 1980s and suddenly remember things I haven’t thought about in decades. An old bedroom. The posters on the wall. Someone’s house. A car ride. A friend I haven’t seen in years. Even the person I used to be. For just a few seconds, it can feel so close that you could almost reach out and touch it. I don’t think Gen X misses the 80s because everything was perfect. It wasn’t. We miss those years because they belonged to us. They hold our childhood, our teenage years, our friendships, our first loves, our music and so many people who were once part of our everyday lives. We thought we were just growing up.
