I miss writing a debugging code. Now you cant hit deadlines if youre coding by hand.

Memorizing syntax won’t make a swe anymore my friend lol. The quicker you realize that you can evolve more

system design is whats important. as long as you are familiar with syntax and basic logic, you can debug code. no need to make urself feel superior just becuz u can write code from scratch. its time consuming not efficient. thats why AI is widely used in enteprrise

The wild thing to me is if you're not reinventing the wheel you almost never were actually coding even before since like 2016. Enterprise/AwS/Libraries are pretty much standardized and its more of a game of memorizing which random ass library in your stack does what you want. Then you pretty much follow the predetermined patterns and sprinkle in some business logic. Idk where tf yall be working where you're engineering software systems. Sounds more of a solution architect role than actual software development. Not to mention the fact that unless you have a reson to almost no one worries or even thinks about low level code anymore.

not to defend AI or anything but I've been an swdev since way before AI and people Google for stuff all the time.....

Coding was even before AI on the decline. SWE were never about coding. It's an Engineer, coding was only part of the process. Talking with customers, understanding requirements, estimating, risk analysis, architecture, testing, CI/CD. Even before AI the coding part itself was more and more outsourced to cheaper countries.

lol. The business/management now puts deadlines as very aggressive due to the company/team now having these expensive AI tools so then you can't check or care that much about the code quality/generated slop code since now the priority is speed. Not sure what you want Devs to do about that.

Honestly, yes using AI does help accelerate production workflows but outside of that it’s still super fun to code , and get stuck and figure stuff out on your own.

Do you feel Like developers will become better and have more time and no longer need to learn cose but just understand how it works and what to do?

nope! sorry... I'm telling you. before AI as a Software Dev with a decade in the game.... I was googling the most basic shit sometimes. like I know it exists, I just cannot remember the syntax. most Devs couldn't dev without the internet, AI is just another tool that's faster.

ok kids deep breathes - back in the 90s we used notebooks and paper to remember syntax. AI just made it digital.

Ai is very good at mirroring, not very abstract as you said. You give it a problem with a solution that has never existed, it will never solve it. So yes you can be a basic software engineer with only knowing how to prompt and basic knowledge, but you will never actually invent anything new. That is at least until AI has human reasoning
