Why Are Marines Called Jarheads?
Why Are Marines Called Jarheads? "Jarhead" is a slang term for a United States Marine. The popular explanation, cited by the National Museum of the Marine Corps, dates the nickname to World War Two — the stiff high collar of the Marine dress blue uniform made a Marine's head look like it was popping out of a Mason jar. Some Marines also attribute the name to the high-and-tight haircut. The documented etymology is older and points somewhere else. By 1906, "jarhead" was already American slang for a mule, a reference to the animal's reputation for being stubborn, dull-headed, and mindlessly obedient. The Army adopted the mule as the West Point mascot in 1899, and pack mules were central to Army logistics well into the twentieth century. From at least 1926 to 1933, the West Coast Army football team — an independent squad drawn from soldiers stationed at western Army posts, playing home games at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco and competing against Stanford in the Pacific Coast — was nicknamed the Jarheads. In May 1933, The Leatherneck, the magazine of the Marine Corps Institute, used the word "jarheads" to refer to US Army soldiers, not Marines. Eleven months later, in April 1934, the same magazine used the word for a Marine. Somewhere in that one-year window, jarhead transferred from the Army to the Marines. Merriam-Webster's dictionary entry on "jarhead" notes that the Mason jar and haircut explanations were probably developed long after the fact. Marines have since claimed the word as their own. #Marines #USMC #Jarhead #MarineCorps #MilitaryHistory #Etymology #Leatherneck #SemperFi
