(KRQE) – Nearly five months after the New Mexico Attorney General asked the U.S. Department of Justice for unredacted files tied to the Jeffrey Epstein case, Attorney General Raúl Torrez said federal officials are now making it clear they will not cooperate. Torrez said the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York — the office assigned to handling the Epstein files — told his office by phone Tuesday that it will not support the state’s reopened investigation. In 2019, federal prosecutors asked Torrez’s predecessor, Hector Balderas, to pause his investigation into Zorro Ranch to avoid interfering with federal proceedings. Now, Torrez is leading the only active criminal investigation related to Epstein. He said survivors and the public deserve a full accounting of what happened at Zorro Ranch. “I think it’s a tragedy and a real stain on the Justice Department that it has gone on this long, without real accountability for the crimes that occurred at Zorro Ranch,” said Torrez. “We are trying to do what we can to remedy that, and in order to deliver on that promise we need our law enforcement partners to cooperate with us in ways that are routine but somehow haven’t happened in this context.” Torrez said his office has made six attempts since reopening the investigation in February to gain access to roughly 200,000 unredacted files held by the DOJ.
