Attorney Brian Panish told jurors in his closing argument on Tuesday that he gets "excited" and "upset" in trial "because I know this family, and I've dealt with this for six years." "These people, these witnesses, I've dealt with them, and you've seen they want to argue with me, they don't want to answer my question. You've seen it right here in this courtroom with your own eyes every day," said Panish, who represents Nancy and Karim Iskander, whose sons Mark, 11, and Jacob, 8, were killed by a speeding and impaired SUV driver in Westlake Village, California, in 2020. The jury on June 2 said Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson are liable for $176 million in compensatory damages: $8 million in past damages and $51 million in future damages for Mark's death, $6 million in past and $42 million in future for Jacob's death, $10 million to Nancy Iskander for past emotional distress and $25 million for future, and $6 million for past emotional distress and $28 million for future to younger brother Zachary Iskander. Panish suggested jurors award $21 million in punitive damages. Deliberations began on Tuesday and will continue today (Wednesday, June 10). Grossman, 62, is serving 15 years to life in prison after a jury in February 2024 convicted her of two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death or serious injury. An appellate panel affirmed her convictions in a 143-page opinion published on March 17. Prosecutors dismissed a misdemeanor reckless driving charge against Erickson, a retired Major League Baseball pitcher who was speeding near Grossman and, according to witnesses, racing her, after he recorded a public service announcement with Grossman’s help. #law #court #attorney
