What is happening today in Afghanistan is very different from a dispute about clothing, tradition, or religion. Since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban has been dismantling, step by step, the presence of women in public life. Girls were prohibited from studying after the sixth grade, women were prevented from attending universities, we lost access to a large part of our jobs, and we had to face restrictions on leaving the house, traveling, circulating, and frequenting spaces such as parks, academies, and beauty salons. The burqa, so present in the images, has become the most visible symbol of this control. But the goal was never just to cover the body. When a regime decides how a woman should dress, how she should walk, where she can be, and whether or not she can be heard, it tries to erase her identity. Clothing communicates presence, taste, origin, and autonomy. That is why authoritarian systems often transform difference into uniformity.
