The issue is not the meaning of “2+2=4”. Everyone can agree on what it means and the fundamental truth it represents. The issue is that some people pointed out that the symbols and the language and the ways mathematics is typically taught have a cultural path dependence which de-emphasizes contributions by certain cultures while having eponymous credit to others. For example we have all these Greek, English, German, or French names for things that were discovered by mathematicians from those cultures but then we just have stuff like “Chinese remainder theorem” or “Arabic numerals” which don’t give any individual credit. Yeah it’s still kinda silly but it’s way different than the way you’re describing it.

Their claim was about pedagogy, not about arithmetic facts. This is the definition of privilege. You can take this position because you didn’t have to compete in a system that wasn’t designed for you. Conversations cannot be had that challenge the systems that protect institutional racism out of fear that people that don’t engage thoughtfully may weaponize an excerpt? Your claim is that having the conversation limits critical thinking because people don’t possess the critical thinking skills necessary to have the conversation? Absurd.

Keep in mind guys. I think most people should attend college. And college should teach them life skills, how to perform well at their job. And hone their critical thinking skills. It should provide illumination for our young minds, not push them into either political party
