The thing is we think he’s going to change so we stay and for a very long time. We don’t believe anyone when they tell you what he does and how he cheats and doesn’t love you… it’s very sad how we belittle ourselves. I left my first husband a year after we had our daughter because I choose not to put her through a toxic environment and I was only 23 and here are woman past their thirties with no kids still believing he’s going to change. He will never change!!!

Repeated hurt matters, but repetition doesn’t automatically mean the other person has zero regret or simply doesn’t care. Repair requires more than saying, “That hurt me.” The other person needs to understand what happened, why it affected you, what deeper history it touched, and what you’re asking them to do differently. Complaints delivered through contempt, blanket statements, and character attacks usually create defensiveness—not understanding. “When this happens, I feel this because of this, and I need this instead” gives the relationship an actual chance to repair and make it stronger.
