🚨 Handling the “over-confident” one👇 🧠 As a manager when someone demands a promotion, when you don’t think they’re ready and approaches it in a way that feels entitled/ demanding it can be tempting to dismiss it. 🚫 I would avoid doing this for several reasons. Promotions are important to people for lots of different reasons so dismissing this conversation will not only damage the working relationship, it is also likely to lead to resentment and low motivation. 💡A big part of a managers role is to help build the awareness of our direct reports through constructive feedback and support, so they have the opportunity to excel and move their career forward in a way that they desire. ▶️ This kind of conversation is the perfect opportunity to do that. Remember we don’t need to match someone’s energy. Show them you respect them and want to support them: “I would be very happy to spend some time going through the skills we would be looking for to consider someone for a promotion and then come up with a plan together to support you develop those skills so you’re in a strong position when the next opportunity arises” ▶️ Avoid criticising- instead reinforce their strengths and highlight the skills they need to develop. It will make it easier for them to hear their growth areas. 🔥 It’s not easy hearing your manager doesn’t think you’re ready for a promotion. Sharing this in a respectful, supportive and constructive way can make all the difference to how someone responds. 💬 Have you ever been told you’re not ready for a promotion or had to tell someone they’re not? Let’s talk about it in the comments 🙂 📌 Please be mindful that the perspective offered in this video is generalised and won’t fit every situation so please follow your instincts about whether this applies to your situation.
