Awareness and Advice about Hospitals‼️‼️‼️ While the medical professionals at hospital cannot do much more for my mother due to her condition, I wanted to share an important piece of advice for anyone caring for an elderly loved one, based on my experiences. If your loved one is admitted to the hospital, I highly recommend being present with them as much as possible, or arranging for a sitter or volunteer if work or other commitments prevent you from being there. Crucially, upon discharge, please ensure that the nursing staff has removed all IV catheters, EKG cords, and any other medical equipment from their body, unless there is a specific medical reason for them to remain. If your loved one is being transported by ambulance and you cannot be present at the time of release, please call the nursing station directly and ask the charge nurse to confirm that these items have been removed. Twice this past May, my mother, who is a double amputee and requires ambulance transport, was discharged from two different hospitals with medical device and/or equipment still attached. In the first instance, she was sent home with an IV catheter left in her forearm. In the second instance, she was released with both an IV in her arm and an EKG cord still attached to her chest. The release from the first hospital was early one evening, but the ambulance did not pick her up from the hospital until very late, which I could not be there at that time. Yes, she was still wearing the hospital gown when she arrived home. The release from the second hospital was around 9:00 a.m. one morning. I was enroute to the hospital to visit her when I received a call from the case manager that she was just released and the ambulance driver was enroute to pick her up and transport her home. I turned around and headed back home. I didn’t think that my mother would have the same experience she had at the previous hospital, so I did not call the nursing station to ask them to ensure all medical devices were removed from her body. These experiences have raised serious questions for me regarding the current state of our healthcare system. I am deeply concerned about potential disparities in care, a decline in overall healthcare quality, and whether care teams are severely overworked, burned out, don’t care, or simply in it for the money or title? *What do you think about the healthcare system? *Do you feel that there is a disparity in the healthcare system? *Do you believe medical professionals are overworked, burned out, don’t care, or simply in it for the money or title? *Do you feel that quality medical care should still be provided to you or your loved one from admissions to discharge, even if a family member is not present the entire time during your/their hospital stay/discharge? *Do you know someone who was released from the hospital with a medical device still attached to them that should have been removed? #fyp #fypviralシ #healthcare
