They do not tell you whether you are doing enough today to create better results next month. One of the biggest lessons I wish I had learnt earlier was to track the actions that drive growth, not just the financial outcomes they eventually produce. That means measuring things such as prospecting, calls, conversations, follow-ups, proposals and dormant customers reactivated. Revenue is a lagging indicator. These activities are the leading indicators that influence it. When you consistently track and improve the right actions, the numbers on your P&L, balance sheet and sales reports should follow.
