Something I get about Fern is that he was actually Finn but he just decided not to be Finn anymore in Fionna and Cake. When Fern did return a lot of people thought him changing meant the show was saying he was never really Finn or that he was trying Finn when he wasn’t which people disliked, but I saw it differently. When I saw Fern being his new self I saw it as him accepting that while he was Finn he just couldn’t be what people saw Finn as anymore. Him changing wasn’t him deciding not to be Finn but to be his own Finn since he couldn’t be the Finn that got to live a life with his friends for longer then he did. He changed but in his heart he still is Finn. Just now he’s a version of Finn that’s lived a different life.
