My mother in law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a year ago, just one year so far! She will cry daily with fear and delusions, paranoia, and loneliness (even though she never left alone for a minute) when she has a “good day” she tells us she doesn’t want to live like this, she doesn’t want to be a burden, which upsets her husband. I hate that US doesn’t have a medical suicide for Alzheimer’s patients. Alzheimer’s isn’t just memory. It’s cognitive disability, only a year has passed and she can’t cut her own food, can’t take a shower, can’t drive, cook, care for her dog. The delusions are getting worse every day, she’s terrified someone is coming to steal her dog. She hides everything, then is upset she can’t find it “someone came in and stole it” We locked up all meds, sharp things and chemicals. Her husband can’t sleep, she wonders at night, there are alarms on every door. She doesn’t recognize ANYONE, not her husband not her children. Now physically she’s fine, healthy. She will most likely live like this for 3-4-5 more years and it will only get worse. So to all who are against medical suicide, where a patient takes one pill, has loved ones with them, saying goodbye. How is this terrible?

Kind reminder that medically assisted dying does not only exist in Canada. It also exist in many other countries with varying laws such as: Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Columbia, Austria, USA, Germany, Italy, etc.

To OPs question: yes, human beings should be allowed to decide when they think it’s time. And I wouldn’t even consider terminal or not. However, Alzheimer’s is an especially cruel disease and what it does to them and their loved ones is horrific. We let our pets go and don’t force them through suffering. Why shouldn’t we allow humans the same grace? No matter if it’s Alzheimer’s, Cancer, mental health, why would you demand they are forced to live through suffering instead of being able to decide for themselves? It’s selfish to guilt them into living in hell because you can’t let go.

I agree with medically assisted dying. My aunt had brain cancer. She was in so much pain. She could no longer sit only lay down or stand and that was still painful. She was loosing her hearing. She was done. MAID gave her choice and dignity. Also we were all with her and we had that chance to surround her in love as she peacefully left this Earth on her terms. It is actually a gift. To each their own, in a person doesn’t believe in it. Fine. But don’t you dare criticize another persons decision.

The short answer is yes, with safeguards to make sure not just they are terminal, but they are making an informed decision of their own free will. I’m also concerned about the impact the availability of assisted 💀 would have on the appetite for research and supports for these same terminal illnesses.

Many people do not understand invisible disabilities, some of which are quite severe. Rebecca had the right and ability to make this difficult and sad decision. I came to love and respect this fabulous woman as she shared these final months of her life with us. I wish people would let go of their judgements, some of which were so cruel. Thank you, Rebecca. I am glad you were released from your suffering.
