@kikuyuheritage: Why the name Lulus Band? When asked where it came from, Daniel Kamau(DK Wa Maria) would simply say it was inspired by the lulu, the pearl. It was a name he chose deliberately, one that reflected the kind of music he wanted to make. Like the pearl itself, his music was shaped patiently, it grew from lived experience & culture rather than the demands of the moment. A pearl is unlike most gemstones. It is formed naturally by a living oyster, layer upon layer, until something ordinary becomes something precious. In many ways, that was Daniel Kamau's own story. Long before Lulus Trio Band, later shortened to Lulus Band, became one of the most recognisable names in Kenyan benga music, Kamau was a young boy in Gatunyu growing up during the colonial State of Emergency. Before he ever entered a classroom, his days were spent herding his father's flock. His evenings, however, belonged to music. His older brothers worked on nearby coffee farms and were accomplished guitarists. At twilight they would return home, pick up their guitars and play late into the evening. Kamau watched them closely, gradually teaching himself to pluck the strings and master the chords. Before long, every spare moment found him with a guitar in his hands. His brothers urged him to focus on school, but music had already taken hold. On 1 June 1963, as Kenyans celebrated Madaraka and the country's first steps towards self-government, Gatunyu was in a festive mood. Kamau's brothers and other musicians were entertain the crowds, but as the celebrations wore on, the musicians became intoxicated in merry and a brawl broke out, bringing the performance to an abrupt end. The interruption created an opportunity that the 14-year-old Kamau did not hesitate to seize. He picked up his brother's guitar and stepped onto the stage. To the astonishment of the crowd, he played with a confidence that belied his age, restoring the celebrations and, unknowingly, launching a career that would span decades.
