I also think Wiress is very intentional because they thought she would be useless in terms of giving advice for combat situations. Her win was odd. She outsmarted everyone else. She wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell these kids how to survive in a normal game(especially when double the tributes meant more opportunities for fighting). They thought she’d be useless to these kids.

it wasnt just extra mentors they gave 12 the oldest mentor and the newest. it doesnt say it but with 4 being a career Mags may have been out of the mentor game by the 50th as fresher faces got the “honor”. and Wiress is brand new. she doesnt know how to network with capitol citizens yet. like their stylist it was the worst options.

48 tributes… but 49 victors by the 50th games. Lucy is gone and I believe other victors have died or gone missing by this point too. Especially with the theory of there being no victor in the 1st QQ. I think they doubled up mentors for the 50th only, but I don’t think every district would have gotten two mentors in the 2ndQQ

This could be used to punish the victors as well. You either help a kid survive and then go back home to see the parents of the kids you helped lose and watch everyone in your district suffer because they don't get the reward, or not help and watch a child that you are responsible for die because you are selfish and putting yourself first.

I really wonder what the “standard” mentor situation is supposed to be during the modern games if they have more than 2 Victors are they draft picked? Do mentors have rules around if your tribute win and mentoring ? Prior to Haymitch I just assumed they threw the newest victor at 12 if applicable and then who ever else got force to. I don’t need another hunger games narrative book I need a book where I get explained how this system work

Was it ever actually said the winners mentor their own districts? I could see them just forcing Haymitch to do 12 every year as punishment

I think a district is supposed to have 2 mentors, but after Haymitch’s game snow specifically denied 12 another mentor to punish Haymitch further, making him choose 1 victor to support and lose them anyway

Given what’s implied about Katniss becoming a mentor in Catching Fire prior to the announcement of the Quell, I’m wondering if it’s more typical to have a female mentor for the female tribute and male mentor for the male tribute, but those two are kind of the “head mentor” for their specific tribute with the other Victors kind of as background support for both tributes. Meaning Haymitch wasn’t just mentoring kids who were destined to lose for 23 years, but unlike everyone else he was doing it alone. To me, this at least explains why Mags ended up with 12 in SotR, there were simply more than they needed and as the eldest Mags was the one the others were most willing to hand off. While Haymitch mentions her comforting a boy, I don’t think this implies she’s his sole mentor, it just stuck out bc that’s who Mags is and it’s uncommon enough for Haymitch to notice. (Also for a Career District, 4 has a suspiciously LOW number of victors come 75.) Wiress seems like a more… mean spirited choice. While Wiress and Beetee clearly have a strong relationship, Beetee can’t be a no-show as a mentor for 50, and while not a Career District it’s implied that 3 isn’t exactly lacking in Victors either, so I could see the other mentors going “nope we don’t want you” about Wiress but also perhaps strategically going “let her get her first mentorship experience out on kids who aren’t ours.”

Sometimes I wonder if in the past (before Haymitch’s games) if any mentor assigned to district 12 has intentionally disadvantaged them in order to indirectly help their own district

I think normally they couple probably just get one of the other Victor's.. but its proble because they had 4 tributes so they got 2. the other districts probably also had 2 mentors in 50

i always imagined it was sorta a lot system whenever a district didn't have a previous victor to mentor them. The 50th specifically had 12 get mags and wiress because the capital would want the representation of the "first victor" and the "most current victor" present for their 50th. I think they could've put them together with 12 simply to have them standing next to each other in promotional stuff and things. I could also just see mags volunteering to mentor 12 out of all the victors mags would have mentored other districts kids the most. Obviously she would've been like the only mentor in the 12th games and i imagine she had a wide coverage for a long time. Wiress gets put with her for optics plus snow has the added layers with ampert going on. I think before the 50th 12 probably just got a random draw of 2 random victors which is probably another factor in them never winning they don't keep a consistent person to grow any sort of loyalty to the district and they also probably got mentors who didn't particularly want to be there but we're summoned in via random lot (which was probably weighted some by the capital so victors they weren't too fond of showed up less)

Karina’s mentions once that if she wins her job will be to mentor the female tribute every year so I assume each district has one male and one female mentor except 12

No matter how bad they do though, people in their district will see them as traitors because they mentored other districts’ players.

The funniest part about this series for me is looking back at all the “facts” I thought I knew or things I thought were cannon but are not. Because when I first ready the first book I was like 12.

I think Wiress also was chosen cause she won her game by not hurting anyone so they were hoping that her advice would be hid which since everything looked okay to eat and to be by her way of living would not work cause the area would kill you
