To ‘sealion’ somebody is to enter a conversation and demand they provide a definition, justification, or proof for every single thing they say. But it is not done from good faith, but it is used as a weapon to exhaust the other person. They might frame it as politeness. They might say it is from genuine curiosity, but they are trying to wear you down. And so they will say, ‘Where is the proof?’ for every single thing you say until you give up. The idea goes back to a 2014 webcomic by David Malki, but the technique is ancient. It is there in Aristotle, 2500 years ago. In his book Sophistic Refutations, Aristotle catalogues all of ‘the tricks of the sophists,’ which are techniques which make it look like you are trying to understand when you are only actually trying to win a debate. And one such trick is when somebody demands an endless stream of definitions. You say something quite clearly, and they ask you to define your term. And so, you do define it. But then they ask you to define the terms within your terms until you go on and on, until the sophist declares that you know nothing at all. And Aristotle said that we are under no obligation to answer some of these questions, especially when those questions are not given in good faith, because some questions are a form of manipulation, and knowing when to dodge, or not answering, is as important as knowing how to argue. Because what Aristotle understood — and the internet clearly shows — is that some requests for dialogue are not genuine. Some people ask questions not because they want to understand, but because they use those questions like rocks in a catapult, and they only want to batter you down.
