On 1 July 1945, about twenty American men met David Ben-Gurion in a New York apartment and were asked to become an American arm of an underground army. The host was Rudolf Sonneborn, a New York chemicals businessman. Ben-Gurion led the movement to turn Palestine into a Jewish state, in a country where two in every three people were Palestinian Arabs. Its underground army was the Haganah. In his diary Ben-Gurion wrote that the men took it upon themselves to help in everything. In 1948, three years later, Sonneborn described that day in a confidential report:
On 1 July 1945, about twenty American men met David Ben-Gurion in a New York apartment and were asked to become an American arm of an underground army. The host was Rudolf Sonneborn, a New York chemicals businessman. Ben-Gurion led the movement to turn Palestine into a Jewish state, in a country where two in every three people were Palestinian Arabs. Its underground army was the Haganah. In his diary Ben-Gurion wrote that the men took it upon themselves to help in everything. In 1948, three years later, Sonneborn described that day in a confidential report: "not even our wives knew its purpose." They had been asked, he wrote, to become "an American arm of the underground Haganah." The group had no directors, no officers, not even a letterhead. They met for lunch every Thursday in a private dining room of the Hotel McAlpin, with the doors barred and the waiters out. Sonneborn wrote that they bought 18 ships to carry Jewish immigrants into Palestine, where Britain ruled and limited how many could come. "The 'Exodus 1947' was ours," he wrote, and five of the ships later joined Israel's navy. In 1948 they set up a company, Materials for Palestine, to supply the Haganah. By that summer, by his count, they had shipped nearly four million pounds of army supplies. On 28 July 1948 Israel's Provisional Government thanked the group, at the request of its defense minister, Ben-Gurion. The Haganah became Israel's army and fought the war of 1948. Palestinians call it the Nakba, the Catastrophe. At least 720,000 of the 1.3 million Palestinians were made refugees. The men in the apartment were asked, and they said yes. The Palestinians who lost their homes were never asked. Sources: Rudolf G.
