The Munao Zongge (目瑙纵歌) is the most important traditional festival of the Jingpo people (景颇族), an ethnic minority in Yunnan, China. • Meaning of the name: "Munao" in Jingpo and "Zongge" in Zaiwa literally mean "everyone dancing together." • Time and place: It is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. It is celebrated every year around the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar (usually in February) in Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan, with Longchuan County being the most emblematic location. The festivities last about four days. • Mass dance: It is known as the "paradise dance" or "the dance of ten thousand people." Tens of thousands of people dance in unison to the rhythm of drums and gongs, creating a breathtaking spectacle. • Ceremony and Attire: In the center of the plaza stand wooden stelae called "Munao Shidong," representing the sun, the moon, and the migratory routes of the Jingpo people. The dancers are led by religious leaders or respected elders ("Nao Shuang" and "Nao Ba"). The men dance with long swords, while the women wave their silver ornaments and colorful fans, reenacting the journeys of their ancestors. • Legend: Legend has it that this dance was learned by humans from birds in the Palace of the Sun and then passed on to the world. Therefore, the dance leaders wear headdresses with feathers that resemble the bird's beak.
