I once talked to a priest about why the Old Testament was so cruel. He had an open mind and said that he also wondered, so he read about the history of this period, and when he got to know it, he understood that even the Old Testament was progressive for those times, giving up blood sacrifices, especially human sacrifices. He also added that people were so primitive at that time that they would not accept that they were to abolish slavery, have only one wife, etc. Especially since in the will itself there is a motif of the Israelites notoriously returning to the old gods, when they were not guarded by a leader who commanded them to believe in the biblical God. He also added that many of the names of the devil in the Old Testament are the names of pagan gods to whom human sacrifices were made. Anyway, I would think it was some kind of demon cult if I heard about sacrificing own children to some "god".

Sacrifice being morally wrong is a new age conception. Yes, in a modern society, it would seem very debaucherous, but dont forget we live by a profit motive in the modern day, we are almost completely devoid of spirituality.

Most first hand accounts are actually correct but in the 1960s it became common place to question first hand historical accounts but people never stopped and asked if the Romans would actually care about the child sacrifice, and the answer is they would have conquered Carthage either way and didn’t need excuses to conquer their neighbors.
