using CGI to enhance and add onto practical effects is miles better than just placing actors into a completely green screened environment and forcing them to react to tennis balls on sticks

This is how you are supposed to do it. Do as MUCH practically as you can. Then hire VfX guys (my line of work) to do the rest. The blend of practical and post work is what makes these movies look so good
