A message queue is a component that allows different parts of a system to communicate asynchronously. It acts as a temporary storage area for data packets called messages. One service acts as a producer by sending a message to the queue. Another service acts as a consumer by picking up that message and processing it. Queues also act as a buffer during traffic spikes to prevent system crashes. If a background service fails the messages stay in the queue until the service is fixed. This ensures that no data or tasks are lost during a system outage. Standard examples of this technology include RabbitMQ and Apache Kafka.
