I think the themes are easily hidden under the simplicity and repetition of the story. But it’s about what we women are made of when stripped of what we think we know about how the world should run, and placed into a space where we have to sit with ourselves. Without men or reproduction in the story to inform us, what makes us human? And I wouldn’t respect the book if it gave all the answers. You experience everything exactly like the narrator. Like her, curiosity propels you to keep going. The reader is provided the same ending as the main character, as it should be. The book doesn’t bend to the will of the typical reader. Mad respect. Plus, the author is a Jewish WWII survivor which adds important context imo.

I'm giving it 3 stars too because it was a story. I didn't like the narrator. I think I understand that the writer wanted us to question our purpose, the purpose of religion, the relevance of human connection and pursuing whatever makes us curious and pursuing and achieving goals but wow, this book overdid depressing. I think it was an observation of the value of youthfulness, education, experience and courage and I can see that everybody has a place. Mostly, this book was depressing.

I just finished it and it made me sob multiple times. I think having no answers makes sense. The women never had any answers or closure of their own. Experiencing through her eyes, knowing nothing about this strange world, it would be wrong if we got answers and they never did.

I loved this book but I do think it helped me that I knew going in I wouldn’t have any answers by the end of the book. When I recommend it to people I always tell them to focus on the journey not the destination.

I refused to listen to this book in audio, I had to read it in my own voice. I found it memorizing and introspective. I appreciate the ending because I’m still thinking about it years later. What gives life purpose and value, what is love, is self love enough? What makes community? Can we still create something meaningful and beautiful in the ambiguity of isolation? So many questions to think about and keep thinking about? Again, I recommend reading it because I think that the wrong narrator/ tone can definitely alter the reading experience. I recommend reading (not audio) books: The Wall by Marlen Haushofer & A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L. Peck (for tbr list). I like a speculative ending. Also if you read The Wall book 📖 afterwards watch the movie (same title) starring Martina Gedeck, excellent film. 🎥
