Respectfully, I think your analogy is flawed. Even if 499 experts said a runway or bridge were safe but 1 said otherwise, it would raise doubt in my mind. Why risk it? I think a better analogy might be something like “499 experts say if we don’t land on the runway we’re going to crash and die” and 1 expert says “nah, let’s avoid the runway and crash land somewhere else instead.” The 499 are echoing the existing consensus. The 1 is proposing something extraordinary and the burden of providing extraordinarily persuasive evidence should fall upon them.

Did you say nuanced? 🤔 If 500 doctors read a metaanalysis of 7 studies and 499 agree, is the 'evidence' the consensus of the 499, or the consensus of the 7 original studies?
