@montgomeryhumane: Tiny Tim is exactly why accessible animal shelters matter. He wasn’t “finding his way home.” He was slowly starving. By the time he reached us, he was emaciated, covered in fleas, suffering from infected skin, open wounds, and lacerations. One look at him made it painfully clear that surviving on his own wasn’t survival at all. Every time a stray is told to “leave him alone” or a family has nowhere to turn before a crisis becomes neglect, this is a possible outcome. We spend a lot of time talking about public safety, adoption numbers, and shelter statistics. Those things matter. But there is another side to this work that deserves equal attention: preventing prolonged suffering. There are fates far worse than the difficult decisions animal shelters sometimes have to make. Tiny Tim is living proof of that. Open-admission shelters exist so there is somewhere to go before suffering reaches this point. We can’t prevent every tragedy, but we can make sure there is still a door open when an animal or family has nowhere else to turn. Tiny Tim’s story isn’t easy to watch.
