Seahorses are among the most fascinating creatures in the ocean, and they have one of the most unusual parenting methods in the animal kingdom. Unlike almost every other species on Earth, it is the male seahorse that becomes pregnant and gives birth. During mating, the female carefully places her eggs into a special pouch on the male’s belly. Once inside, the male fertilizes the eggs and carries them safely for several weeks. Inside the pouch, the babies receive oxygen, nutrients, and protection while they develop, almost like a human baby growing in the womb. When the babies are fully developed, the male goes through powerful contractions to push them out into the ocean. A single male can give birth to anywhere from a few dozen to over 1,000 tiny seahorses at once. Although they are born fully formed, the newborns are completely independent from the very first second of their lives. Seahorses are also unique because they mate for long periods, and some species stay with the same partner throughout an entire breeding season. Their tails can wrap around coral and seagrass, helping them stay in place despite strong ocean currents. These tiny fish may look delicate, but their incredible family life and unique biology make them one of the most amazing animals in the sea.
