Apologizing to your children is so good for both of you. Demonstrating how to be wrong is just such a good thing for them to see not just the healing nature of repairing the relationship

“ have I taught you this before?” or “ has anyone taught you this yet?” - I do this with my six-year-old granddaughter instead of asking her. “Does she know how to do something?” Because the responsibility of her knowing how to do something is on the adults in her life, not her.

Oh and also “resting your body is just as important as moving your body. You need both.”

“You’re allowed to be mad, you’re not allowed to be mean” and “there is nothing you can do to make me stop loving you” are phrases we use all the time in a house with a 14, 4 and 2 year old

As a nanny I also throw in a “thank you for correcting me” when they’re right and I’m wrong. We were at an indoor trampoline park a few weeks ago during the worst of the wildfire smoke, and when we were placing our very large order at the snack bar, I forgot one of the snacks. Kid spoke up, and I thanked him for reminding me.

A big one for me is “You’re not a bad kid, you’re a good kid who made a bad choice. Let’s learn from it and try to make a better choice next time.” I’ve seen too much hurt come from a kid thinking they’re a bad person cuz they made a bad choice. I also use “our head works better when our heart is calm” as a reminder to take a breath when the mad gets too big.

That last one is the most important! Kids won’t take accountability if their parent won’t! Also, my fave lesson I’ve repeated for 18 years, Practice makes PROGRESS in all things, because perfection is impossible 😅

your feelings are valid, how you treat other people while you're feeling your feelings is also important.

It’s not your fault that you’re tired, but it’s your responsibility to manage it (me to my 13 year olds after they choose to pull an all nighter at a slumber party),
