I feel like I instantly became a better conversationalist when I stopped trying to relate to people’s experiences and started to question thought processes and decision making instead. Most people appreciate the curiosity but some people don’t like it at all lol

I highly recommend the book “the like switch” I can’t remember the name of the author, but he was an ex FBI agent and deep dives into how people think and approach others and I think it’s a really good to help understand how other peoples minds work and how to communicate better with people
