@dr.matthew.parker: Historical psychiatric treatments part 4: tooth extraction. Yikes In the late 1800s, physician Henry Cotton claimed he discovered the cure for mental disorders. His idea was that mental illness was the result of hidden infections in the body. If you went to see Cotton, he would start in your mouth. If the mental illness persisted (which it likely would, and would probably worsen), he would then move to other parts/organs in your body and remove them as well. Cotton’s idea was propped up by bogus claims that he had cure rates of 80%, which independent research later found to be wildly inaccurate. Many of Cotton’s patients died of infection (ironically), or were excluded from his findings if the results were unfavorable. Now, theories of treatment need to be supported by evidence that can also be independently verified, reproduced, and generalized, some of the central tenents of the scientific method. Hope everyone is staying safe from the wildfires! #MentalHealth #psychiatry #MentalHealthAwareness #medicine #History
