David Varlow, a 78-year-old man from Halesowen, died after a break-in at his home, in a case that shocked the West Midlands community. The incident led to the conviction of Adris Mohammed, 44, who has now been jailed for life after a jury found him responsible for David's death. The court heard that Mohammed entered David's home during the night. Once inside, he restrained David and demanded the PIN for his bank card. He also disabled the house's phone line so David couldn't contact anyone for help. Prosecutors said this was a planned burglary targeting someone who lived alone and was unlikely to be able to resist. After leaving the house, Mohammed used David's bank card to withdraw roughly £8,000 from his account. While David remained inside his home, the stress of what had happened caused a fatal medical reaction, which a postmortem later confirmed. The court said his death was the direct result of the ordeal he was put through. In a detail that deeply concerned investigators, Mohammed returned to the property nine days later with another man. David had already passed away by this time, and Mohammed took another bank card from the home. Police described this return visit as showing a disturbing disregard for the victim.
