Conflict happens when caring for an aging parent 😳😥…here’s what I TRY to do Life as a family caregiver Part 5 when you’re taking care of your mom or dad who is aging, it can be incredibly emotional and difficult sometimes. Especially if they are suffering from major cognitive decline, like dementia. I find, sometimes it’s hard to separate them from where they currently are to who they used to be in the past. And a lot of things they do will just flat out frustrate and anger you. My partner and I have been caregivers for her 85-year-old mom with dementia for 2 1/2 years now. We definitely struggled a lot with depression, anxiety, and resentment. Although we feel incredibly lucky to be able to care for her mom in our own home, and we planned for many years to actually make it happen, and we wouldn’t have any other way, it still is an incredibly difficult thing to do. And it can be incredibly frustrating. Which can lead to conflict. We have been working really hard to get ourselves to a better mental state, and just become overall better caregivers for her mom. And working on things like patience and kindness for both ourselves and for her. Something I have been using a lot is self compassion and just compassion in general. I found an amazing book, called mindful self compassion for burnout. By Dr. Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer. Which is what I got this three step system from. So if you’re caring for your mom, your dad, or your grandparents and are curious what other people’s journeys look like follow along! #caregiver #agingparents #creatorsearchinsights
