@igqwithsineadbovell: Writing was once feared by many. Socrates worried that written texts would replace oral tradition and leave people parroting ideas they never actually understood. When the printing press reached Europe in the 15th century, Renaissance moralists feared it would flood the world with superficial thinkers who skimmed everything and mastered nothing. They weren't entirely wrong. Rote memorization did fade. But the same technology carried knowledge out of monasteries and royal courts and into coffee houses and lecture halls, and for the first time human knowledge became cumulative, and much more complex. That shift built new institutions and new methods of thought over time, from the scientific method to journalism, and it raised the bar on what it meant to be a thinking person. Artificial intelligence puts us at the same kind of moment. We can offload more of our thinking to it, or we figure out ways to leverage it that can strengthen the skills that matter most: complex thinking, reasoning, and critical thinking.
