@mattypowz.md: What say you? 🫵 Melanoma or not? At first glance, it appears dark blue to almost black, irregular, and nodular. Those are features that can overlap with melanoma, including some nodular melanomas. But dermatology is about recognizing patterns, not just colors. 🔍 Dermoscopy revealed multiple blue to violaceous lacunae separated by pale septa, a classic vascular pattern consistent with a vascular malformation. The color itself is fascinating. Although many people think veins are blue, the blood inside them is actually dark red, even when deoxygenated. The bluish appearance results from the way light interacts with the skin. Because this lesion lies deeper in the dermis, shorter blue wavelengths are preferentially scattered back to our eyes, a phenomenon known as the Tyndall effect. In many ways, this is similar to a varicose vein, just in an unusual location. By combining the clinical history with dermoscopy, this lesion could be recognized as benign and safely monitored without the need for a biopsy. 💙 #melanomaawareness #melanoma
