@helloamandaleigh: We make around $500K a year... and this weekend we spent exactly $26. 😂 I think social media has convinced a lot of people that “high income” automatically means luxury everything. Private schools. Designer bags. Massive kitchens. Fancy vacations every month. The truth? Income and wealth are not the same thing. We still budget. We have financial goals. We’re paying off debt, investing for retirement, saving for our kids, and choosing experiences over keeping up with strangers on the internet. But every dollar has a job, and right now that job isn’t granite countertops or luxury shopping hauls. This weekend our paycheck bought... one trip to Waffle House. That’s it. Because building wealth often looks a lot more boring than social media would have you believe. Do you think social media has changed people’s expectations of what “rich” looks like? 👇 #debtfreedom #PersonalFinance #Budgeting #highincome #workingmom

We make around $600k a year and while I do have granite countertops my cabinets look just like yours and I like my early 2000’s kitchen. 😂 we don’t have a ton of debt BUT we prefer to spend our money on travel instead of an aesthetically pleasing kitchen. My home is clean, functional and cute but it’s not magazine worthy.

As someone with a very high hhi, the only way people are affording the things you see online are with tons of debt. Like TONS.

I always say that my 2-person, $300k household is broke, but we aren’t poor. Working on the broke part as well, but budgeting and saving really is a learned skill, especially when you’re trying to pay down debt.

Our household incomes are very similar. Daycare, rent, and student loans take over $10k each month before we factor in anything else. I remember making $40k right out of undergrad and thinking if I could just make $120k, I wouldn’t need to budget anymore. Now, I know better, haha.

no really 200 is middle class now due to drastically higher housing costs!. my husband makes over 225! we have a modest mortgage of 330k and our 30 year mortgage was almost 3000 bucks a month! that is insane! fortunately we were able to refi into a 15 yr at a lower interest rate but still high - now our mortgage is 3262! we don't have debt but to do the right thing with the money with giving and savings and putting money into our kids education (i homeschool but to do it right is really expensive and our state doesn't give any money for homeschooling materials) and future cuz Lord knows they won't be able to afford anything when they are grown...we budget and like one big expense will blow the budget!

I’m concerned that anyone thinks $500K a year gets them anywhere close to a private plane lol

Same!! We just moved into a bigger home bc we have 5 kids. And no one talks about how you work your way up and don’t know what to do with that much money at first so you have to figure it out 😂

We make around 525k/yr and our kitchen looks the same as yours. However we have spent the last 2 years paying off our laziness and the ramifications of not budgeting, my having a medical emergency and then being laid up for almost 13 months. But we are down from 285k in debt to 76k.

I’m so glad I found you!!!! We live modest, trying to pay off debt and we save more than the average. Our income is a little over 400k a year and we have a modest home, we fly economy, we LOVE Waffle House, and we travel to countries like Thailand for Christmas🤭🤭! experiencesoverthings🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

500k and you have debt? I make similar on Long Island I have 200k left on a 1.5 mil house. 300k in cars paid off and a million in retirement in my mid 30’s. Just paid 150k cash for a pool. 200k kitchen cash is the next project this winter. How do you have debt making 500k?

We live in Maryland with combined income of 240k. To live near work with good school districts, it’s super expensive. Thought our income would go a lot further ): horrific houses going for 650-700k

We need to move to a bigger house as we have just started a family and everything in our area is $800k-1.2M for a 4 bedroom house and people think I’m insane when I say I’m worried about affording our life on $350k a year after a move. Like JUST my monthly paycheck from a 6 figure salary is barely enough to cover the mortgage on a house that expensive. And now we have to add in childcare and all the other expenses babies come with and like I’m STRESSED.

I think it also depends on where you live. 200k goes further in some places, and not so far in others. but overall as someone who makes similar money as you, you are right it doesn't go as far as you would think after putting away for future investments.
