I finished reading the novel it's +800 pages long and it deals with a lot of heavy topics aside from sex work there's very patriarchal Chinese family dynamics, government corruption, class and economic inequality, being queer in ultra-conservative upper class society and there's also a side couple of two women who are friends who fell in love but then their parents decided to get married that's also really messy. These are all major plot lines of the book.
