@ultrabasicmetamafic: Did you know that Pompeii used to be a port? It was a city along the coast of Rome busting with life and art. The eruption was so large and deposited so much Pyroclastic material that it extended Italy’s shoreline by about half a mile, which is crazy! Pompeii is most notorious for the plaster molds capturing the final moments of life of the people who lived in Pompeii. The molds represent people from all stages of life and were created when archaeologists in the 18th century found holes with bones in them. They decided to pour plaster in these holes and then excavate the molds, revealing casts of people that were buried in volcanic ash and preserved after thousands of years. The artwork and frescoes were preserved extremely well because of the volcanic ash. You can walk through the streets of Pompeii and see mosaics in the sidewalks and in the floors of homes, as well as frescos on buildings in the streets and on the walls of homes. The ruins of Pompeii were found in the 16th century but excavation didn’t really start until the 18th century. Excavation is still an ongoing project! - #geology #pompeii #archaeology #Science #italy
