Goodbye, Auntie Tawny The reason you haven’t seen any new “what your favorite says about you” videos is because I’ve retired the Auntie Tawny character. The persona was based on the time I spent in my late teens and early 20s when I did drag very unprofessionally as Long Dong Jovi. That’s where I learned how to read and be read to filth and to this day those are some of the funniest people I’ve ever met in my life. But the thing about being in that space is we all knew everyone was joking and while everything was said with a kernel of truth, it was also always said with love. And somewhere down the line, my “what your favorite says about you” videos started hitting the feeds of people who didn’t appreciate them, either because they didn’t think I was joking… or because they just didn’t think I was funny, which is completely fair. But there was not an insignificant percentage of that aforementioned group of people who thought I was being mean as opposed to hyperbolic or sarcastic and they didn’t know Auntie Tawny was a character. I’m genuinely not sure how much responsibility an artist or entertainer is supposed to take when it comes to how the audience is interpreting their work. I know there is line and sometimes it’s very easy to see that line but other times it’s not as expressly evident. That being said, I realized fairly recently that we are living in a time where it’s difficult to determine what is true and authentic. Events, things, and people that should be firmly under the umbrella of the absurd and surreal are very much a part of our reality. An old lady who somehow knows enough about your favorite movies and shows in order to tease you about them might not come off as said old lady also teasing herself. And while the Auntie Tawny character was very snarky, sarcastic, and often deadpan, the last thing I actually want to do as real Tawny is cause harm. In other words, this just might not be the right time and place. And I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing either. I think comedy, entertainment, and art should evolve. So while I won’t be making “what your favorite says about you” videos, that doesn’t mean I’m not leaving the space entirely. I’ve started a new comedy series called “Inferno Inc” that’s out now that I describe as “Corporate comedy meets cosmic justice” and is a mockumentary reality tv series about the women keeping the bureaucracy of the afterlife running. There’s also my podcast “String and Tell” that features comedians like Taylor Tomlinson and Patton Oswalt and other funny people like Matthew Mercer, Danielle Radford, Jess Ross, Jordan Myrick, The Slappable Jerk, and many more. I’ll also still be making the “evolution of character trope” videos as well as the voice acting analysis and performance ones. For those of you who enjoyed “what your favorite says about you,” thank you so much for joining me in laughing at ourselves and celebrating our favorite series and movies together. #funny #nostalgia #movies #tv #millennial
