The Making Of Lil Wayne's "A Milli" 🎤 Bangladesh didn't make the beat for Wayne or for anyone specific. He just made music in his style, four or five elements, minimal, centered on an 808 bass. Once the beat was finished, he immediately heard Wayne on it. But he held onto it for two years, turning away everyone who wanted to buy it, convinced it was meant for Wayne and nobody else. Bangladesh never went to the studio with him for this record, Wayne recorded it entirely on his own terms. The original plan wasn't a solo Wayne record at all. The concept was to make it an interlude for Tha Carter III featuring younger artists, Tyga and Cory Gunz among them. Bangladesh was against the idea from the start. The beat was too important to be buried as filler. Wayne eventually came back to it himself recording several versions before settling on a final cut with no hook, no chorus, just Wayne rapping from start to finish. Then Bangladesh heard the result and didn't like it. He felt Wayne had simply rapped over the beat without building a proper song around it. He was convinced the lack of a traditional format was going to hold the record back from reaching its full potential. He was wrong. "A Milli" peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 2009 and became one of the most dissected rap performances of that era. The beat Bangladesh had been sitting on for two years became one of the most recognizable instrumentals of the decade. He later sued Cash Money for $500,000 in unpaid royalties eventually settling later that year.
