It is a South Indian Tamil language word describing meat ,fish or vegetables cooked in a gravy (KARI) the word is a very old word in Tamil language culture describing these dishes and probably if you North Indian,you may not know this or heard of it..it is not an English word.

She's from South India but in northern India especially punjab they have a yellow puree dish called kadhi made of yourgurt and tadka. I'm pretty sure they picked up curry from there cause it looks like most of the india purees

The English word "curry" comes from the Tamil word kaṟi, which means a spiced sauce, relish, or side dish meant to be eaten with rice. In South India, kari historically referred to spiced vegetable or meat dishes, and related terms existed in other Dravidian languages like Malayalam (kari) and Kannada. (Pre colonial times!)

My family are Indians from Fiji and we call our curry dishes ‘Tharkari’ maybe thats where the word originates from
