there is another theory that devil tower is not a cut off tree but a horn of a dragon. if you look from the top, google maps, the second horn and mouth can be spotted

If these are petrified trees, why is there only one in that area? If one was cut down millions of years ago, leaving that stump, where are the other ones that would have been growing in the same area?

fun fact - microbes that break down wood evolved long after the trees themselves did. Trees rot and break down today, because such microbes exist. But, the earth spent a long time without them, and that wood piled up/fossilized. Similarly, those microbes are also the reason that our plant is no longer sequestering hydrocarbons.

modern wood rots because fungi have evolved since ancient times. when trees first sprang up nothing would eat them and they would just fall over and stack. this is where coal deposits come from when they would catch fire but didnt have enough oxygen to burn.
