Six weeks ago, we brought Parker into our sanctuary. This morning, we said goodbye💔 Parker was one of our newest hospice residents. He came to us abandoned at a shelter, carrying a cancer diagnosis and no one left in his corner to fight it with him. We said yes, because every dog deserves someone in their corner, no matter how much time they have left. The first few weeks were nothing short of a miracle. He was receiving iv chemo, oral chemo and his scans came back basically cancer free. We watched him settle into a real life for what felt like the first time. His skin, once irritated and neglected, finally started to heal. He learned what it was like to nap in a soft bed, to be fed homemade meals, to be touched gently instead of ignored. Slowly, quietly, Parker became part of our rescue family🐾 Then this morning everything changed. The dog who had just started to trust us, who had just started to feel safe, began slipping away from a body that simply couldn’t keep fighting anymore. For six weeks, our only job was to make sure he never felt that fear again. We held him through the hard nights. We celebrated every good day like it was a gift, because it was. We made sure that whatever time he had left, it would be filled with softness instead of survival. When his gums went white, we understood what his body was telling us. We sat with him. We told him he was safe, that he was loved, that none of what happened to him before was ever his fault. And then, this morning, Parker was lifted from his failing body. No dog should have to spend their final days fighting cancer completely alone in a shelter. Parker didn’t. He spent them surrounded by people who chose him, who fought for him, and who would choose him again in a heartbeat even knowing how short our time together would be. Rest easy, sweet boy. You were loved completely, from the moment you left that shelter to the moment you left this world, and every moment in between🌈❤️ #seniordog #dogrescue #rescuedog #dachshund #chihuahua
