@litemindedtherapy: Psychologically, fantasy often protects us from having to face a reality that once felt unbearable: that the person we needed may not have been capable of meeting us in the way we needed. Holding onto the possibility that things could still become different allows the attachment to stay intact. It gives us a sense of control over something we were actually powerless inside of. Because if the answer is that we just need to be more lovable, more patient, more understanding, or less demanding, then there is still something we can do. The fantasy protects us from grief, but it can also keep us trying to solve an old wound through the present. This is why reality can sometimes feel more threatening than disappointment. Letting go of the fantasy does not only mean accepting who another person is; it can mean mourning the version of the relationship, and sometimes the version of ourselves, that we believed their love would finally make possible. That grief can feel like losing hope, even when it is actually the beginning of seeing more clearly. The work is not to stop longing or needing connection. It is to become more able to tell the difference between a relationship that is growing and one that survives mainly through what we keep imagining it could become. #emotionalneglect #complextrauma #traumatherapy #nyctherapist #relationaltrauma

I was an emotionally alone kid and kept that mentality to this day, I’m not waiting on anyone to save me. People are who put me through that so I’m not letting anyone do it again.

I’ve acknowledged this about myself and completely understand no one is going to save me but myself but there’s always this tiny deep down hope that someone will magically come save me I don’t think that ever goes away when you’re raised with neglect.

Emotionally neglected, only child representing. Coupled with undiagnosed ADHD, my childhood was a clusterfuck that still has repercussions. 👌🏻

100% relatable. I was a maladaptive daydreamer and in a state of limerence for years. Still prone to limerence but thankfully now free from the though of the one imaginary person that will finally save me. Now i developed schizoid traits tho 😭

Ladies, it’s all chemicals. Once you hit perimenopause, the chemicals dissipate and you realise it was all brain drugs and you are more than enough on your own. You do not need romantic love to thrive. Or even friends really. Just stay calm, enjoy the little things, and don’t stress. ♥️

i’ve just always wondered, isn’t this the norm? i mean how often does someone grow up with the kind of parents that are emotionally attuned and understanding? can we call it “trauma” when it’s the experience of so many? how long can i blame my suffering on this, when maybe it’s just part of being human? shouldn’t i be more focused on figuring out how to cope instead of finding a reason? these are genuine questions

That makes neglected children very vulnerable adults. It ends up being very easy to enter toxic relationships and not noticing on time.

I've been saying it for years: this is why I think so many women read romance novels where the female character is in a shitty situation and can't get out by herself. Why else would A Court Of Thorns and Rose's be so popular? The smut certainly wasn't very good, and the overall story of the series has major issues, but it perfectly encapsulates that situation.

I'm a day dreamer but not in a maladaptive way, in a way that makes my life more interesting. It doesn't interfere with my day to day life. I should probably write books but my life is way too busy 😭
